Basic Safety Training
The STCW Basic Safety Training Courses are the minimum legal requirement for all crew working commercially at sea. These essential courses ensure you have the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely and effectively on board.
STCW 10
Your maritime journey starts with STCW. This is a compulsory requirement for anyone wanting to enter the maritime industry. It includes a set of basic safety training courses with the primary objective being to equip crew members with the necessary skills to effectively respond to unforeseen challenges at sea; safeguarding the well-being of both crew and guests onboard.
Our STCW Basic Training Course courses are accredited by MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) and recognised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and are valid for a period of 5 years.
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers and is an international set of regulations that establishes the minimum training, certification, and watchkeeping standards for seafarers globally. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) developed the STCW Code to ensure that seafarers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to work on vessels safely and efficiently.
The basic safety training includes:
Designated Security Duties (DSD)
Elementary First Aid (EFA)
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
Pre-requisite and qualifications
Students must be 18 years or older.
On completion of each course you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
For successful completion, 100% attendance is required and students are expected to actively participate in all elements of the course.
Some of your basic safety training courses need to be re-certified every 5 years.

Designated Security Duties
The training in Designated Security Duties is for all seafarers who are designated to perform security duties, including anti-piracy and port security on seagoing vessels.
Duration: 2 Day Cost R1701
The outcomes of the training:
- Maintain the conditions set out in the ship security plan;
- Recognise security threats and risks;
- Understand the importance of and undertake regular security inspections of the vessel;
- Maintain and use security equipment and systems found on board the vessel.

ELEMENTARY FIRST AID
The training in Elementary First Aid is for all persons serving on seagoing vessels and some Port Operations vessels. The objective of the training is so that seafarers may take immediate action on encountering an accident or other medical emergency until the arrival of a person with first aid skills or the person in-charge of medical care on board.

The outcomes of the training:
- Can assess needs of casualties and threats to own safety;
- Have an appreciation of body structure and functions;
- Have an understanding of immediate measures to be taken in emergency situations.

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
The training in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting is for all Seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement including some Port Operations vessels. The objective of the training is so that all seafarers understand the dangers of fire and are able to take preventive measures against fires as well as responding to emergency situations involving fire.
Duration: 3 Day Cost R2689
The outcome of the training;
- Minimize the risk of a fire occurring;
- Maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency fire situations;
- Carry out initial actions on discovering a fire on board;
- Identify the different firefighting mediums and which is the best to use for different types of fires, and actively and positively contribute to a fire fighting team.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
The training in Personal Safety and Social Responsibility is for all Seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties. The objective of the training is to ensure that all seafarers can take responsibility for their own safety whilst looking out for the safety of others as well as protection of the marine environment from pollution associated with ships.

- Comply with emergency procedures;
- Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment;
- Observe safe working practices;
- Contribute to effective communications on board the vessel;
- Contribute to effective human relationships on board the vessel;

Personal Survival Techniques
The training in Personal Survival Techniques is for all Seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement including some Port Operations vessels. The objective of the training is so that all seafarers understand the basic survival techniques required to survive the perils of the sea.
Duration: 2 Day Cost R2116
The outcome of the training:
- Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment;
- Identify emergency situations which may occur;
- Identify life-saving equipment normally carried on vessels;
- Identify and use equipment found in a survival craft;
- Locate personal life-saving appliances;
- Understand the principles concerning survival at sea.

The training in Medical First Aid is for all seafarers who are designated to provide medical first aid onboard Seagoing Vessels and some Port Operations vessels. The objective of the training is so that seafarers may take immediate and effective action in the case of accidents or illness likely to occur onboard.

The training in Security Awareness is for all seafarers serving on seagoing vessels which are required to comply with the requirements of the ISPS Code, on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s compliment without designated security duties. The objective of the training is to ensure that all seafarers have heightened security awareness and vigilance.
