Postcard from Abroad
We’re delighted to share a special message from a newbie yachtie as she recalls her story of her journey this far in the yachting world. Her journey is a testament to the excitement, challenges, and growth that come with being part of this unique industry. And how determination and resilience are so important.
Finding My Footing
Let me take you on a short journey into my world of yachting as a newbie and how it has shaped me. Towards the end of last year, I headed out to the South of France and later to Palma, arriving just as the yachting season was starting to wind down. I knew the chances of securing a position onboard a M/Y was slim but decided to go anyway as I felt the overall experience of being there would be beneficial. The experience of leaving the comfort of my home and my support system and heading solo to a new country was daunting but I was determined to find my footing. Beyond seeking a job, my time there allowed me to navigate the various accommodation options, master grocery shopping, learn to confidently use public transport and it gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in the culture and lifestyle. I have always been quite independent but being in a foreign country and learning to take care of myself was liberating. Although I didn’t secure a position onboard a vessel, the day work I found was invaluable. I was able to earn money and pay my way, (well mostly) but most importantly, I gained yachting experience, I learned from seasoned professionals and built valuable connections.
Resilience and Growth
After a few months at home I was eager to get back. I spent my time back home gaining as much land based experience as I could and got a few more essential qualifications. I arrived in France at the beginning of May and I was able to find ample day work that sustained me financially and enriched my skills and gave me some much needed experience. I have been very fortunate to secure myself a position onboard a magnificent 52m motor yacht, after only 5 weeks. But trust me when I say, those 5 weeks were tough. I spent my days working and spent most of my free time job searching and networking, while dealing with the very real fear of job uncertainties, the challenges of constant rejections and the thought of returning home. Through all of this I’ve learned that resilience and perseverance are key. Sadly many fellow greenies faced tougher paths, and I have said goodbye to many friends who had no choice but to return home, making me even more grateful for last year’s experiences as I believe this set me apart and gave me an advantage this season.
Embracing New Experiences
One of the most rewarding aspects has been meeting incredible people along the way. I have connected with remarkable individuals and made some amazing friends. Yachting isn’t just a job; it’s a community where friendships blossom over shared experiences and a love for the sea.
Through my day work, I’ve had the opportunity to work on various-sized yachts with established crew, gaining invaluable experience not only as a stewardess and deckhand but also in understanding the intricacies of what it takes to work on these incredible yachts. Now I am navigating new paths as I establish myself a member of a crew, living and working onboard and once again finding my footing.
Gratitude and Aspirations
Mastering yacht life provides new adventures and lessons every day. From mastering new skills, to exploring new ports, to preparing for boss trips and charters, every day provides opportunities to learn and grow. But then there’s also those magical moments of soaking in the sunset from the deck and I am incredibly grateful for it all!
Conclusion
Following my dreams despite the hurdles fuels my determination, making the rewards even sweeter. I’m just starting out on my journey, driven by my love for travel and connecting with people. My goal is to carve out a fulfilling career in the yachting world, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
To all the aspiring yachties out there, remember: if you want something bad enough, it’s up to you to go out there and grab it!
Fair winds and smooth seas fellow travellers
